The Crafting Process
The process begins by selecting each stick according to its shape, weight, strength, durability and individual character. Each is then slowly transformed into a serviceable, one-of-a-kind walking stick or hiking staff.
First, the stick is cut to a functional length preserving the wood's natural shape while achieving an acceptable weight and good balance. Next, each is carefully machine sanded only enough to remove its bark and any knots or other anomalies. Then each stick is hand sanded to expose the wood's natural grain and obtain a smooth finish. Some sanding is also done to help shape a natural grip or handhold.
Next, several coats of protective polyurethane are applied to each stick to protect and enhance the wood's rich grain.
Finally, grips, lanyards and tips may be added as necessary. Materials used for grips may include leather or jute or may even be hand-beaded. Leather, braided nylon or other similar materials are used as lanyards. The type of grip or lanyard is determined by both the individual character of the stick and its intended use.
